In her life she was born into slavery, she became a nurse, educator, and laundress for the Union Army, while also teaching soldiers to read and write.
My contemporary activist is Hermina Glass-Hill.
In her life, her curiosity about whales started in childhood, inspired by the biblical story of Jonah and the big fish, often thought to be a whale. The two people are similar because they both fought to keep African American history alive and shared stories to educate others.
They both worked to inspire change and preserve important legacies.
This matters because it keeps those stories from being forgotten.
It shows the U.S. can honor diverse voices and history. The two people are different because one was a slave and escaped, and the other fights more for sea life. Susie King Taylor taught kids who were slaves, while Hermina Glass-Hill helped honor Susie’s legacies. This is important because it connects past and present efforts to honor African American contributions.
It shows that the U.S. can build on its history to create a more inclusive future. For my creative piece, I chose to make a website that shows who said/wrote/is/was in the game, and you have to guess who said it.
